Watsonville Law Center provides free legal advice, brief services, and representation in key areas that protect the rights and livelihoods of low-wage individuals and families on California’s Central Coast.

Working Family Health Equity

Our legal services help working families access pregnancy- and family-related workplace protections. Our team assists clients in applying for California State Disability Insurance (SDI), Paid Family Leave (PFL), and workplace accommodations for pregnancy-related disabilities.

We also advocate for the safety of working mothers, including protecting those at risk of exposure to unhealthy or unsafe conditions such as pesticide exposure.

Housing Access Project

We believe that every Californian deserves to live in healthy, safe, and affordable housing. We serve clients facing unsafe living conditions, housing discrimination, or the threat of eviction.

Our advocacy is grounded in the belief that every eviction is a public health hazard. By collaborating with community partners, we connect vulnerable residents with the legal support and resources they need to stay housed.

Workers’ Rights Project

We advance the rights of vulnerable and unrepresented workers by helping them understand and assert their workplace rights. We assist with claims involving:

Workplace discrimination and sexual harassment
Unpaid wages and wage theft
Workplace violence and unsafe conditions

Immigrant Justice Project

The Immigrant Justice Project provides vital immigration advice, civil rights protections, and legal services to households facing immigration-related vulnerabilities. We work to ensure that individuals and families are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect under the law.

Our team assists community members in navigating complex immigration processes, protecting their civil rights, and connecting to resources that promote safety and stability. By standing alongside families, we help them build stronger foundations for their futures—free from fear and with greater opportunity to thrive.

Economic Justice Project

Our Economic Justice Project takes action against predatory practices and works to strengthen financial capacity and long-term sustainability for individuals and families. We provide advice and representation to help community members protect their rights, build financial stability, and safeguard their futures.

Our services may include:

Advice and representation, when possible and appropriate, for those impacted by predatory lending and unfair financial practices
Support for increasing financial capacity and protecting income
Tools and resources to help families work toward long-term economic sustainability

Beyond Legal Representation

Our work extends beyond the courtroom. We are deeply embedded in the community, working to empower residents and build lasting change through:

Community Legal Education – “Know Your Rights” trainings, legal workshops, and information sessions in schools, clinics, churches, and for other partners.
Crisis Response – Rapid mobilization during events such as intensified civil rights violations, natural disasters, or public health emergencies, providing legal information, collaboration, referrals and benefits access.
Advocacy & Systems Change – Partnering with local organizations, policymakers, and coalitions to challenge systemic injustices and push for inclusive policies.
Capacity Building – Training community leaders, community health workers, and nonprofit staff to recognize legal issues and connect people to help—strengthening legal literacy and trust across the region.

CalWORKs Legal Services

In partnership with Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, Watsonville Law Center provides specialized legal assistance to CalWORKs participants, helping families address challenges that may affect their stability and self-sufficiency.

Our services include:

Child Custody & Visitation – Guidance to help parents navigate custody and visitation arrangements that support the well-being of their children.
Family Financial Stability – Advice and legal support on issues that impact household finances, including child support, access to benefits, and strategies for resolving debt.
Holistic Support – Collaboration with county agencies and community partners to connect participants with additional resources, from housing assistance to employment programs.

Through this partnership, we help CalWORKs families protect their rights, strengthen their financial foundation, and build a more secure future.

Medical-Legal Partnerships

Watsonville Law Center works closely with healthcare providers and clinics to integrate legal assistance into medical care for vulnerable patients.

Through these partnerships, we:

Identify and address legal issues that impact health, such as housing conditions, employment rights, immigration status, and access to public benefits.
Provide on-site legal screenings, consultations, and referrals at medical facilities to ensure patients receive timely support.
Collaborate with medical professionals to develop holistic care plans that incorporate legal advocacy as a key component of patient well-being.
Educate healthcare staff on the intersection of law and health to better support patients facing social and legal challenges.

By embedding legal services within the healthcare setting, we help remove barriers to health and promote equitable outcomes for individuals and families in our community.

Servicios

Watsonville Law Center brinda asesoría legal gratuita, servicios breves y representación en áreas clave que protegen los derechos y medios de vida de trabajadoras/es y familias de bajos ingresos en la Costa Central de California.

En WLC diseñamos nuestros servicios legales para abordar los desafíos reales que enfrentan las comunidades de bajos ingresos e inmigrantes en la Costa Central. Cada proyecto se enfoca en eliminar barreras, proteger derechos y crear oportunidades para que individuos y familias prosperen.

Equidad en la Salud de Familias Trabajadoras

Nuestros servicios ayudan a las familias trabajadoras a acceder a protecciones laborales relacionadas con el embarazo y la familia. Asistimos en solicitudes de Seguro Estatal por Incapacidad (SDI), Licencia Familiar Pagada (PFL) y adaptaciones laborales por discapacidades relacionadas con el embarazo.

También abogamos por la seguridad de madres trabajadoras, incluyendo la protección de quienes están en riesgo de exposición a condiciones dañinas o inseguras, como la exposición a pesticidas.

Proyecto de Acceso a la Vivienda

Creemos que toda persona en California merece vivir en viviendas saludables, seguras y asequibles. Atendemos a clientes que enfrentan condiciones de vivienda inseguras, discriminación en la vivienda o riesgo de desalojo.

Nuestra defensa se basa en la convicción de que cada desalojo es un riesgo para la salud pública. En colaboración con socios comunitarios, conectamos a residentes vulnerables con el apoyo legal y los recursos que necesitan para mantenerse en su hogar.

Proyecto de Derechos Laborales

Avanzamos los derechos de trabajadoras/es vulnerables y sin representación, ayudándoles a comprender y hacer valer sus derechos en el trabajo. Atendemos reclamaciones relacionadas con:

Discriminación laboral y acoso sexual
Salarios no pagados y robo de salarios
Violencia laboral y condiciones inseguras
Lesiones en el trabajo

Proyecto de Justicia para Personas Inmigrantes

El Immigrant Justice Project brinda asesoría migratoria esencial, protecciones de derechos civiles y servicios legales a hogares que enfrentan vulnerabilidades relacionadas con inmigración. Trabajamos para que todas las personas sean tratadas con dignidad, justicia y respeto ante la ley.

Nuestro equipo ayuda a navegar procesos migratorios complejos, proteger derechos civiles y conectar con recursos que promuevan seguridad y estabilidad. Al acompañar a las familias, les ayudamos a construir bases más sólidas para un futuro con menos miedo y más oportunidades.

Proyecto de Justicia Económica

Nuestro Economic Justice Project toma acción contra prácticas depredadoras y fortalece la capacidad financiera y la sostenibilidad a largo plazo de personas y familias. Brindamos asesoría y representación para proteger derechos, construir estabilidad financiera y resguardar el futuro.

Más Allá de la Representación Legal

Nuestro trabajo va más allá de los tribunales. Estamos integrados en la comunidad, con el objetivo de empoderar a residentes y construir cambios duraderos mediante:

Educación Legal Comunitaria – Charlas de “Conozca Sus Derechos”, talleres legales y sesiones informativas en escuelas, clínicas, iglesias y con otros aliados.
Respuesta a Crisis – Movilización ágil ante violaciones a derechos civiles, desastres naturales o emergencias de salud pública, brindando información legal, coordinación, referencias y acceso a beneficios.
Incidencia y Cambio de Sistemas – Trabajo con organizaciones locales, responsables de políticas y coaliciones para cuestionar injusticias sistémicas e impulsar políticas inclusivas.
Fortalecimiento de Capacidades – Capacitación a líderes comunitarios, promotores de salud y personal de organizaciones para reconocer problemas legales y conectar a las personas con ayuda—fortaleciendo la alfabetización legal y la confianza en toda la región.

Servicios Legales para CalWORKs

En alianza con los condados de Monterey y Santa Cruz, WLC brinda asistencia legal especializada a participantes de CalWORKs, ayudando a familias a enfrentar desafíos que afectan su estabilidad y autosuficiencia.

Nuestros servicios incluyen:

Custodia y Visitación de Hijas/os – Orientación para acuerdos que favorezcan el bienestar de niñas y niños.
Estabilidad Financiera Familiar – Asesoría y apoyo legal en temas que afectan las finanzas del hogar, incluyendo manutención de menores, acceso a beneficios y estrategias para resolver deudas.
Apoyo Integral – Colaboración con agencias del condado y socios comunitarios para conectar a participantes con recursos adicionales, desde vivienda hasta empleo.

A través de esta alianza, ayudamos a las familias de CalWORKs a proteger sus derechos, fortalecer su base financiera y construir un futuro más seguro.

Alianzas Médico-Legales

WLC colabora estrechamente con proveedores y clínicas de salud para integrar asistencia legal en la atención médica de pacientes vulnerables.

A través de estas alianzas:

Identificamos y abordamos problemas legales que impactan la salud, como condiciones de vivienda, derechos laborales, estatus migratorio y acceso a beneficios públicos.
Realizamos evaluaciones legales, consultas y derivaciones en centros de salud para asegurar apoyo oportuno.
Colaboramos con profesionales de la salud para desarrollar planes de atención integral que incluyan la defensa legal como componente clave del bienestar.
Capacitamos al personal de salud sobre la intersección entre derecho y salud para apoyar mejor a pacientes con desafíos sociales y legales.

Al incorporar servicios legales en el entorno de atención médica, ayudamos a eliminar barreras a la salud y promovemos resultados más equitativos para individuos y familias.
